The Apollo Theater is one of the most historic venues in New York. When it originally opened in 1914 as Hurtig and Seamon’s New Burlesque Theater, it was a whites-only venue. But after it shuttered and reopened in 1933, the new owner rebranded the space to celebrate emerging artists and cater to the African-American community. Ever since, the Apollo stage has been considered the place “where stars are born and legends“—including Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder—“are made.”
