Chicago might not seem like the most obvious setting for a festival dedicated to outdoorsy adventure, fitness, and activation, but Outside magazine’s annual Outside Experience is here to change that perception. After launching last year, the event is bigger and better than ever, thanks to its new home on Northerly Island and an expanded roster of activities fit for the whole family.
Outside has filled the docket for the 2020 festival, which takes place May 16 and 17, with everything from adventure vehicles, bike demos, and group runs to films, live music, craft beer, and yoga. And thanks to its new location, the brand is able to actually and literally get outside and offer a wider range of sports and gear, courtesy of companies like Eddie Bauer and Go RVing.

Outside Experience is also a great weekend outing for families, boasting kid-focused movie screenings, fishing classes, rock-climbing sessions, and dog competitions.
Altogether, the energy-packed event is a fun and unique addition to Chicago’s booming festival scene, which has ballooned to become a year-round roster of music, food, beer, and more. The magazine and this fest are here to spotlight all the ways Chicagoans and Midwesterners can maximize the opportunities in their backyard, be it paddling, off-roading, climbing, running, cycling, or RV-ing.
